Australian Box Office Marks Largest Opening Weekend Since 2019 With Spider-Man Brand New Day

The Australian box office continues to have a stellar run this year, now marking a new milestone with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Over the Thursday to Sunday weekend (30th July to 2nd August), the film grossed $30.4M. It makes it the second-largest weekend opening at the Australian box office, second only to the 34.1m four-day opening of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

The impressive results at the Australian box office are a result of the film breaking records globally. Spider-Man: Brand New Day film has marked numerous achievements at the worldwide box office this weekend, delivering an historic USD$927m worldwide opening including a USD$355m opening in the Domestic U.S market, where it is the #2 opening of all-time behind “Avengers: Endgame”.

The Australian box office had already broken records last year, when it grossed the combined power of James Gunn’s Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth generated $24.1M in one weekend of mid-July 2025, delivering the largest weekend since 2019. That record has now been broken by the 30.4M earned this past weekend.

The film has been embraced by both critics and audiences globally, currently certified fresh with a 90% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It it the first Spider-Man film in 5 years, since 2021’s “Spider-Man No Way Home”, which also broke box office records.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s success at the Australian box office also marks several other records. The $30.4M gross is also The biggest opening weekend of 2026, the biggest opening weekend outside of holidays the biggest Box Office ever recorded on a Saturday ($9.3m), and the biggest Box Office ever recorded on a Sunday ($8.18m). These numbers all pertain to Australia.

The film is currently showing at over 315 locations nationwide in Australia.

With the recent success of The Odyssey, which generated more than $1M in its first weekend at a single location alone (IMAX Melbourne), the Australian box office is showing clear signs of recent strength, with moviegoers showing up consistently to see large-scale spectacle films.
