Event Films Are Powering Australia’s Box Office Resurgence

Australian cinemas are enjoying one of their strongest periods in recent years, with a slate of blockbuster releases driving audiences back to the big screen and reinforcing the growing importance of event cinema.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey helped kickstart the momentum, delivering Australia’s biggest opening weekend of 2026 as audiences flocked to IMAX and other premium-format screenings. The success continued with Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which posted one of the biggest global openings in box-office history while also performing strongly across Australian cinemas.

For exhibiters, the results reflect a shift in audience behaviour. Rather than visiting cinemas for every new release, moviegoers are increasingly reserving the experience for films that offer scale, spectacle, and cultural discussion.

That trend has prompted continued investment in premium exhibition across Australia. IMAX, Gold Class, V-Max, SCREENX and other large-format auditoriums have become increasingly central to cinema operator’s strategies, allowing for marketing the world’s biggest films on Australia’s biggest and best screens.

The industry’s confidence is also reflected in the release calendar. While established franchises remain a major draw, films such as A24’s The Backrooms and the psychological thriller Obsession, suggest studios are continuing to position original genre films as theatrical events rather than streaming-first releases. Alongside franchise heavyweights including Shrek 5, Avengers: Doomsday and Avatar: Fire and Ash, they represent a diverse slate designed to keep audiences returning to cinemas throughout the remainder of the year.

Australia has become an increasingly valuable international market for those releases. Despite its population of just over 27 million, the country ranks among the strongest overseas performers for major Hollywood films, with premium-format screenings accounting for a growing share of opening weekend revenue.

For local exhibiters, the current run of films offers more than a short-term box office boost. It reinforces the role of cinemas as destinations for shared cultural experiences at a time when streaming continues to dominate day-to-day viewing habits.

As Hollywood studios increasingly focus on theatrical releases capable of generating global conversation, Australia’s appetite for event cinema is proving to be one of the industry’s greatest strengths. If the recent success of The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is any indication, the country’s cinemas is set for one of its strongest years since the pandemic.
