Becca Hatch Joins Dwayne Johnson on Disney’s New Moana Companion Album

The Brisbane singer-songwriter appears alongside Stan Walker, Dinah Jane and Iam Tongi on Moana: Voices Across the Ocean, a new collection inspired by Disney’s blockbuster franchise.

Australian singer-songwriter Becca Hatch has landed alongside Dwayne Johnson, Stan Walker, Dinah Jane and Iam Tongi on Disney’s latest expansion of the Moana franchise, contributing an original song to the forthcoming companion album Moana: Voices Across the Ocean.

The 15-track collection, announced today by Disney Music Group, brings together 25 established and emerging Pacific artists, each contributing original music inspired by the themes, cultures and storytelling that helped make Moana a global phenomenon.

Hatch’s contribution, ‘Natural’, sits alongside new recordings from a line-up that also includes Spawnbreezie, Tenelle, Common Kings, Josh Tatofi, DJ Noiz, Kennyon Brown, Donell Lewis and Fatai.

Unlike a traditional soundtrack, Moana: Voices Across the Ocean features 14 original songs written in response to the film, alongside a new recording of ‘We Know the Way’, the anthem co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa’i for the original 2016 animated feature.

The project also marks another extension of Disney’s increasingly expansive Moana universe as the studio prepares to release its live-action adaptation, with Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui after voicing the character in the animated films.

Johnson, who executive produced the album alongside his wife Lauren Hashian, also contributes the song ‘Your Dad’, written as a tribute to his daughters.

“Our No. 1 goal with this album was to create a global opportunity for Polynesian artists to share their beautiful voices, powerful mana and shine,” Johnson said.

“As you’ll hear, every artist delivers dynamic performances that represent multiple genres. Several of our Pasifika islands are represented and, while emanating immense cultural pride, their artistry and sounds show that great music has always had the power to bring all people together.”

The album was co-executive produced by Polynesian cultural practitioners Tiana Nonosina Liufau and Kayla Fa’amaligi, who said they wanted the collection to celebrate the diversity of Pacific music by allowing each artist to bring their own cultural identity and musical traditions to the project.

The music spans island reggae, R&B, soul, pop, country and contemporary Polynesian influences, reflecting the diversity of artists drawn from across the Pacific.

The album artwork was created by master Polynesian carver Sam Mangakahia, whose hand-carved paddle incorporates motifs representing Aotearoa, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Hawai’i, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga, symbolising the cultures represented throughout the collection.

For Hatch, the project represents another significant international credit as her profile continues to grow beyond Australia, placing her alongside some of the Pacific region’s most recognised contemporary artists on one of Disney’s biggest global entertainment brands.
