Paramount says the Stan original has become the fastest-selling Australian drama ever ahead of its international debut.

Australian medical drama The F Ward has become the fastest-selling Australian drama in history ahead of its international rollout, with Paramount Global Content Distribution securing licensing agreements across 100 international markets before the series launches overseas.

The six-part series, commissioned by Stan and co-produced by Roadshow Rough Diamond and CBS Studios, premiered in Australia last month and has already attracted broadcasters and streaming platforms across Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia and New Zealand.

Among the buyers are Channel 4 in the U.K., SkyShowtime across 22 European territories, HBO Asia, CBC and CBC Gem in Canada, JioHotstar in India, Sky NZ, Claro video across Latin America and RTÉ in Ireland.

Paramount said the breadth of the deals makes The F Ward the fastest-selling Australian drama ever before its international launch.

The series stars International Emmy Award winner Anna Friel as Dr. Emma Fisher, alongside Ioane Sa’ula, Lola Bond, Dan Wyllie, Alex Fitzalan, Emily Barclay, Annie Boyle and Rishab Kern.

Set in Sydney’s struggling Pines Hospital, the drama follows a group of junior doctors given one final opportunity to complete their medical training. As they confront underfunded wards, impossible workloads and life-or-death decisions, they’re also forced to grapple with personal trauma, fractured relationships and the expectations they’ve placed upon themselves.

Paramount Global Content Distribution President of Global Content Licensing Don McGregor said the show’s combination of medical drama and character-driven storytelling resonated quickly with international buyers.

Buyers around the world moved quickly to secure The F Ward, making it the fastest pre-launch sale ever for an Australian drama, and that alone speaks to the strength of this production.”

Co-creator and producer Dan Edwards said the international response had exceeded expectations following the series’ Australian debut.

Created by Dan Edwards and Kelsey Munro, the series was developed by the creative team behind Bump and is executive produced by John Edwards, with Natalie Bailey (Down Cemetery Road) and Neil Sharma (Critical Incident) directing.

The supporting cast includes Arka Das, Paula Arundell, Jeremy Sims, Susie Porter, Toby Schmitz and Alex Dimitriades.

Produced by Roadshow Rough Diamond and CBS Studios, The F Ward received major production investment from Screen Australia, with additional financing from Screen NSW’s Made in NSW – TV Drama Fund.

The international sales mark another milestone for Australia’s television industry, underscoring the growing appetite for premium local drama in the global marketplace. While Australian medical dramas have traditionally found success at home, Paramount’s worldwide rollout positions The F Ward as one of the country’s most significant scripted exports of the streaming era.

Since premiering on Stan, the series has attracted strong critical notices, with The Sydney Morning Herald describing it as “excellent,” The AU Review praising its “funny, heartfelt” storytelling, and The West Australian calling it “must-see TV.”
