Audible and Higher Ground’s six-part A Great Book with Barack Obama will explore works by James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, John le Carré and other celebrated authors.

Barack Obama is assembling an A-list reading group for his new podcast.

Tom Hanks, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jill Lepore, Ben Rhodes, Percival Everett and Lauren Groff will join the former U.S. president for A Great Book with Barack Obama, a six-episode series launching exclusively on Audible on Sept. 24.

Produced by Audible and Higher Ground, the podcast will feature Obama discussing six books that helped shape his worldview. Each episode pairs the former president with a prominent actor, author, historian or political figure to examine a particular work and its ideas about identity, power, memory and culture.

Hanks will join Obama to discuss Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead, while Coates will explore James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time. Historian and journalist Lepore will consider Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men, and former Obama adviser Rhodes will discuss John le Carré’s Cold War espionage novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Everett will appear in an episode devoted to Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, while Groff will join Obama to revisit Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses.

The conversations will explore how influential books can shape a reader’s understanding of society and what the stories people return to might reveal about the world they hope to create.

A Great Book with Barack Obama is the sixth release to emerge from Audible and Higher Ground’s ongoing partnership. Previous collaborations include Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, hosted by Michelle Obama; Your Mama’s Kitchen: Conversations from the Heart of the Home, hosted by Michele Norris; Wesley Morris’ The Wonder of Stevie; and the Peabody Award-winning Fela Kuti: Fear No Man, hosted by Jad Abumrad.

The companies also collaborated with The History Channel and Pushkin Industries on Reconstruction: The Unfinished Promise, hosted by Malcolm Gladwell and featuring Obama.

A Great Book with Barack Obama will debut exclusively on Audible on Sept. 24 before becoming available on YouTube and other podcast platforms later this year.
