‘The Night of the Ad-Eaters’ Is Coming to Australia for the First Time in 20 Years
The cult French advertising event will take over Sydney’s Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace for a one-night-only screening of commercials from 45 countries, as the Alliance Française expands its screen culture offering beyond the French film festival.
In an era when audiences reflexively reach for the skip button, one of France’s most enduring cult cinema experiences is making the case for watching the commercials instead.
La Nuit de l’Advertising, internationally known as The Night of the Ad-Eaters, will arrive in Australia for the first time in 20 years when the Alliance Française de Sydney brings the event to the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne on October 22, 2026.
The one-night-only screening will feature commercials spanning more than 70 years of advertising history and 45 countries, combining celebrated international campaigns, contemporary creative work and cult advertising classics in a three-hour cinematic showcase. The program will include recent Cannes Lions winners alongside commercials remembered for their humour, visual invention, emotional storytelling and unapologetic kitsch.
Created in France 45 years ago by advertising collector Jean-Marie Boursicot, the event has developed an international following among advertising professionals, filmmakers and audiences interested in the intersection of popular culture and commercial creativity.
For its Sydney debut, the format will lean into the theatricality of a live event rather than the conventions of a conventional film screening. Audiences will be encouraged to cheer, boo, whistle and debate the commercials as they appear, with a live stage-show intermission adding to the evening’s party atmosphere. All films will be subtitled.
“La Nuit de l’Advertising is all about celebrating the artistry, history, and pure entertainment of global advertising,” said Amaury Treguer, a board member of the Alliance Française de Sydney.
“Commercials are a reflection of the world we live in, and it creates a common language between generations. Australia has always punched above its weight creatively, so it felt like the perfect fit to bring this iconic event here.”
Treguer added that the experience would be designed to provoke an active response from audiences, rather than the polite silence typically associated with cinema.
“It’s not a polite screening; it’s a cinema full of people cheering, booing and debating what makes a great ad.”
A global archive of advertising comes to the big screen
At the heart of La Nuit de l’Advertising is Boursicot’s extraordinary archive of commercial filmmaking. His collection, which reportedly contains more than 1.5 million advertisements, grew from a childhood fascination with commercials and their ability to capture the cultural obsessions, aesthetics and social attitudes of different eras.
Boursicot launched The Night of the Ad-Eaters to share that collection with audiences, turning a medium traditionally designed to interrupt entertainment into the main event.
The concept has since travelled internationally, building a following around the idea that advertising can be appreciated as a creative art form in its own right. Its screenings draw on the breadth of commercial filmmaking, from meticulously constructed cinematic productions to bizarre, funny or unexpectedly moving spots that have become cultural artefacts.
The Sydney program will also highlight the longstanding relationship between advertising and the film industry. Commercials frequently provide a proving ground for directors, cinematographers, editors, composers and performers, while major film stars have regularly appeared in campaigns around the world.
For the Alliance Française de Sydney, the event represents an opportunity to bring advertising, cinema and creative culture into the same room — and to introduce a French cultural institution to an audience beyond traditional art-house filmgoers.
Alliance Française expands beyond its French film festival
The organisation is best known in Australia for the Alliance Française French Film Festival, which it has presented nationally since 1989. Now in its 38th edition, the festival recorded 213,000 admissions across Australia in 2026, according to the organisation.
That established audience has helped inform the decision to bring La Nuit de l’Advertising to Sydney, with organisers hoping to create a new annual fixture for screen culture enthusiasts, advertising creatives and the broader public.
The Alliance Française de Sydney is an independent, not-for-profit language and cultural organisation dedicated to strengthening ties between France and Australia. It forms part of a global network of 813 Alliances Françaises operating across 138 countries.
The advertising event extends that mission into a different corner of the screen industries, celebrating a form of storytelling that reaches audiences across languages, generations and national borders.
It also offers a potential meeting point for the commercial creative sector. Organisers are seeking brand partners for the Australian premiere, with opportunities spanning on-screen advertising, product gifting and live activations.

After four decades of turning commercials into a communal cinematic experience, the French cult event is bringing its distinctly participatory approach to Australian audiences. For one night, the advertisements will not be the interruption between stories. They will be the stories themselves — and the audience will have the final say.
