Smallville Turns 25: The Superman Series That Defined a Generation Finds New Life in Australia

Twenty-five years after a teenage Clark Kent first arrived on television screens, Smallville is celebrating a milestone that few superhero series have achieved.

Premiering in the United States on October 16, 2001, the Warner Bros. drama reimagined Superman’s origins through the experiences of a young Clark Kent, played by Tom Welling, as he navigated adolescence, friendships and the gradual discovery of his extraordinary abilities.

Now, as the series marks its 25th anniversary, Australian audiences have an opportunity to rediscover the show, with all ten seasons available to stream locally on Netflix and Prime Video.

Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville became one of the defining television dramas of the early 2000s, blending teenage relationships with the mythology of DC Comics long before interconnected superhero universes became a fixture of mainstream entertainment.

Its premise was built around a simple idea: before Superman became the world’s most recognisable superhero, he was a teenager growing up in rural Kansas.

Welling starred alongside Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor and Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, with Erica Durance later joining the series as Lois Lane.

Across ten seasons and 218 episodes, the show followed Clark’s transformation from an uncertain teenager into the hero audiences had known for generations.

The series concluded in May 2011, but its influence continued as superhero television expanded throughout the following decade.

To mark the anniversary, Welling and Rosenbaum have reunited for a series of retrospective conversations about the show’s production, legacy and enduring popularity.

Speaking to the Television Academy, Rosenbaum reflected on the friendship he developed with his former co-star.

“Tom and I have honestly become closer after the show,” Rosenbaum said.

“We always worked really well together. But it wasn’t until years later that we started spending more time together and visiting each other. We’re kind of like brothers.”

The anniversary has also brought together several members of the original creative team.

Appearing on Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Welling, Kreuk, Durance and series creators Gough and Millar revisited the show’s early years and reflected on the creative decisions they would approach differently today.

Among the most candid revelations was the creators’ acknowledgement that Lana Lang’s character could have been given greater independence throughout the series.

“We would give Lana more agency earlier in the show,” Gough said, identifying it as one of the changes he would make if given the opportunity.

The anniversary celebrations have extended beyond cast reunions.

Warner Bros. Discovery has opened its archives to showcase memorabilia from the production, including the original Smallville town signs, Kryptonian artefacts, Green Arrow’s costume and elements of the Luthor mansion set.

The collection offers a reminder of the show’s ambitious world-building, which gradually expanded from a small-town coming-of-age drama into a sprawling interpretation of DC’s superhero mythology.

For Australian viewers, the anniversary arrives at a time when the series is readily accessible to a new generation.

Smallville joined Netflix Australia’s catalogue in January 2026, while Prime Video also offers the complete series locally.

Its availability allows longtime fans to revisit the show and younger audiences to discover a version of Superman’s story that predates the modern era of cinematic superhero franchises.

Although Smallville initially avoided many of the conventions associated with Superman, including Clark’s familiar costume and ability to fly, its gradual approach to the character’s transformation became one of its defining features.

Rather than beginning with an established superhero, the series explored the personal experiences, relationships and difficult choices that would eventually shape Clark Kent into Superman.

The 25th anniversary celebrations will continue in November with a dedicated Salute to Smallville convention in Nashville, Tennessee, featuring Welling, Rosenbaum, Kreuk, Durance and members of the creative team.

A quarter of a century after its premiere, Smallville remains a significant chapter in the history of superhero television.

And with its complete run once again available to Australian audiences, the story of Clark Kent’s journey towards becoming Superman continues to find new viewers, 25 years after it began.
