The ‘Yellowjackets’ star will also executive produce the six-part limited series, which explores the 97 days between the deadly mushroom lunch in regional Victoria and Patterson’s arrest.

Paramount+ has greenlit Mushroom Murders, a six-part limited drama series starring Melanie Lynskey as convicted murderer Erin Patterson, whose deadly mushroom lunch in regional Victoria became one of Australia’s most closely followed criminal cases.

The multi-Emmy-nominated Yellowjackets actress will also serve as an executive producer on the series, which will examine the 97 days between the July 2023 lunch and Patterson’s subsequent arrest.

The production will revisit the events surrounding a family gathering at Patterson’s home in Victoria, where she served individual beef Wellingtons to her estranged husband’s relatives.

Three guests subsequently died after consuming meals containing highly toxic death cap mushrooms.

Rather than focusing solely on the lunch itself, the series will explore the period that followed, as the deaths became the subject of an increasingly high-profile investigation.

The drama has been created by Australian screenwriters and producers Anya Beyersdorf (Fake, Apple Cider Vinegar, Fires), Daina Reid (The Handmaid’s Tale, Shining Girls, Run Rabbit Run) and Deb Balderstone (Dustfall, Ticket to Paradise, Palm Beach).

Reid will direct all six episodes and serve as an executive producer, while Beyersdorf will write and executive produce the series.

The writing team also includes Dianne Taylor (After the Party) and Belinda Chayko (Fires).

Mushroom Murders will be produced by Soapbox Pictures, with Balderstone and Xavier Marchand (A Gentleman in Moscow, Spotlight) serving as executive producers alongside Lynskey, Beyersdorf and Reid. Sophia Mogford will executive produce for Paramount+.

The casting of Lynskey marks a significant addition to the streaming platform’s Australian drama slate.

The New Zealand-born actress has earned widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Shauna Sadecki in Yellowjackets, receiving multiple Emmy nominations for her performance.

Her casting as Patterson places her at the centre of a story that attracted intense media attention in Australia and internationally.

Beverley McGarvey, president of Network 10 and head of streaming at Paramount Australia, said the series would bring the case to the screen with an ambitious creative approach.

“This is an ambitious series that brings a gripping real-life story, that captivated Australia and the world, to the screen with the scale, quality and creative vision audiences expect from Paramount+,” McGarvey said.

“It is a powerful addition to our growing slate of premium storytelling, and we are delighted to partner with such an exceptional creative team to share it with viewers around the world.”

McGarvey also welcomed Lynskey’s involvement in the production.

“We are also thrilled to welcome Melanie Lynskey, whose remarkable talent will be integral to the series both on screen and as an Executive Producer.”

The commission adds another high-profile true crime adaptation to the streaming landscape, with the Patterson case having generated considerable public interest since the deaths in 2023.

The decision to concentrate on the 97 days between the lunch and Patterson’s arrest gives the production a defined narrative framework, exploring the period during which the circumstances surrounding the deaths came under scrutiny.

Mushroom Murders also joins a growing slate of original drama commissions announced by Paramount+.

Among the projects in development are a Clueless sequel series featuring Alicia Silverstone’s return as Cher Horowitz, Laird starring Kenneth Branagh, Ascent led by Viola Davis and The Best of Us starring Jeremy Strong.

The platform has also announced Fear Not, starring Anne Hathaway, and Discretion, featuring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning.

A production schedule and premiere date for Mushroom Murders have yet to be announced.
