‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Continue Blockbuster Runs at Australian Box Office
Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey continue to dominate Australian cinemas, with the two Hollywood tentpoles maintaining their grip on the top of the local box office.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day held the No. 1 position for a fourth consecutive weekend, adding another A$5.31 million between Thursday and Sunday to bring its Australian total to A$76.8 million.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey remained close behind at No. 2, generating another A$2.87 million over the weekend. The historical epic has now reached A$56.9 million locally.
Together, the films have generated more than A$133 million at the Australian box office, providing exhibitors with two major event releases simultaneously drawing audiences well into their theatrical runs.
The latest Spider-Man instalment has led the Australian chart since opening at the end of July.
Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, Brand New Day debuted to A$30.43 million across its opening weekend — the second-biggest opening ever recorded at the Australian box office, behind only Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
The film attracted 1.46 million admissions during those first four days, while Saturday, Aug. 1 became the highest-grossing single day in Australian box-office history.
Its extraordinary local performance reflects an even bigger run internationally. Brand New Day has now grossed approximately US$2.22 billion worldwide after four weekends, placing it among the highest-grossing films in cinema history.
The Odyssey, meanwhile, has demonstrated significant staying power of its own.
Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic has reached approximately US$1.4 billion worldwide, making it the filmmaker’s highest-grossing release and surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film globally.
Australia has proven a particularly strong market for the film’s premium-format strategy. The Odyssey recently became the first movie to generate more than A$10 million from IMAX alone at the Australian box office.
New releases have so far been unable to dislodge either film locally. Horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further was the weekend’s highest new entry, debuting in third place with A$1.16 million.
With Spider-Man and The Odyssey continuing to occupy the top two spots weeks into their respective runs, the pair have become the defining releases of a particularly strong winter period for Australian cinemas.
