Australian Box Office Breaks Multiple Records as Cinema Attendance Soars for 2026
The Australian box office has continued a strong run in 2026, breaking multiple all-time records.
August 2026 marked the highest grossing Australian box office result of any August in history. It was also the fifth consecutive month on record of $100m+ at the Australian box office, marking the first time that has happened.
In general, the box office has been consistently stronger this year. From April 2026 to August 2026, the cumulative Australian box office surged to over 30% above the same period last year. In particular, August 2026 box office was roughly double the August 2025 box office. This is due in part to the wide range of films on offer, and Australian audiences choosing to visit cinemas more often in general this year.
While the box office hasn’t fully recovered to pre-COVID levels, such a comparison isn’t as relevant now that the market has shifted so vastly. Consumer behaviour isn’t as it used to be when it comes to seeing films in cinemas. Streaming is more available than ever, and with releases having increasingly shorter exclusivity windows in cinemas, audiences need only wait three or four weeks sometimes until films are available to watch at home on demand.
DC Studios’ Supergirl for instance, was available to watch on digital just 32 days after its release in cinemas. A more popular film like The Devil Wears Prada 2 took 60 days to reach digital, but neither of these numbers compare to the historical precedent of a traditional 90-day exclusivity window where a film could only be seen in cinemas.
The better news for the box office is that cinema attendance has recorded more than 3.75x the live stadium attendance of the NRL and AFL combined. Even still, live sport and cinema are both thriving and growing industries, which continue to deliver entertainment for Australian audiences.
From now until the end of 2026, over 100 new films in Australian cinemas. With such outstanding results so far, we’re excited to see how high the Australian box office can grow for the rest of the year and into the future.
