Netflix’s action sequel is expected to generate $127 million for the state economy as production gets underway on the South Coast and in Sydney.

Netflix has officially begun production on Extraction 3, with Chris Hemsworth returning to Australia to shoot the latest chapter in one of the streamer’s biggest original film franchises.

Filming commenced this week across the New South Wales South Coast before moving into Sydney, with the production expected to create around 450 local jobs and inject an estimated $127 million into the state’s screen industry and broader economy.

Hemsworth reprises his role as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake alongside returning cast members Golshifteh Farahaniand Idris Elba, with Sam Hargrave returning to direct after helming the first two installments. The screenplay is written by David Weil, while AGBO’s Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco and Ari Costaproduce alongside Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson through their production company Wild State.

The third film represents another significant investment by Netflix in Australia’s screen sector, continuing the streamer’s relationship with NSW following major international productions filmed in the state. Production is being supported through the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the NSW Government’s Made in NSW Fund, administered by Screen NSW.

“Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with Extraction 3, we’re taking our biggest swing yet,” Hargrave said as production commenced.

Producer Patrick Newall credited support from both state and federal governments, along with Screen NSW and other agencies, in securing the production for Australia.

The original Extraction became one of Netflix’s biggest early global hits following its 2020 debut, setting viewing records for the platform at the time and spawning a sequel in 2023. Both films subsequently earned places on Netflix’s list of its most-watched English-language features, cementing Tyler Rake as one of the streamer’s signature action heroes.

The franchise is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, developed into a global action property by AGBO, the production company founded by Anthony and Joe Russo. The Russo brothers have continued to expand the universe beyond the original films, with multiple projects tied to the franchise now in development.

For Hemsworth, the production marks another major Australian shoot through his company Wild State, which has increasingly become involved in producing premium international film and television projects alongside the actor’s on-screen work.

Netflix’s APAC Director of Production Policy, Debra Richards, said the production highlighted the value of continued government support for attracting large-scale international projects to Australia.

“We’re thrilled to bring Extraction 3 to life in New South Wales, working with exceptional local crews on a project of this magnitude,” Richards said. “Federal and State support remains vital in strengthening the Australian film landscape and building sustainable professional pathways.”

Plot details for Extraction 3 remain under wraps, although the film is expected to continue the story of Tyler Rake following the events of Extraction 2. A release date has yet to be announced.
