The 30th-anniversary production will combine the Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes film with musicians, vocalists, electronics and a live DJ.

Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet will return to Australian stages in 2027 as a live-to-film concert marking the 30th anniversary of the director’s genre-bending blockbuster.

Following its sold-out world premiere at the Sydney Opera House on Sept. 29, the production will embark on an international tour spanning three continents. The Australian leg will visit Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in May 2027.

The film will be presented in full, with its original dialogue and action intact, as a hybrid ensemble performs the score and soundtrack live. The production brings together rock and orchestral musicians, vocalists, electronics and a DJ to recreate the film’s distinctive fusion of Shakespearean tragedy and 1990s pop culture.

“One of the greatest surprises over the past three decades has been watching Romeo + Juliet find new audiences again and again,” Luhrmann said. “That’s the enduring magic of Shakespeare and cinema.

“This concert celebrates both, while inviting audiences around the world to experience the film’s emotion, music and theatricality in a completely new way.”

Released in November 1996, Romeo + Juliet starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, relocating the tragedy to the heightened modern setting of Verona Beach.

The film opened at No. 1 at the U.S. box office and became one of Luhrmann’s defining works. Its maximalist visual style, rapid-fire editing and contemporary soundtrack helped introduce Shakespeare to a new generation while establishing many of the creative signatures the Australian filmmaker would carry into Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsbyand Elvis.

Music was central to the film’s identity. Its soundtrack featured Des’ree’s “Kissing You,” The Cardigans’ “Lovefool,” Radiohead’s “Talk Show Host,” Garbage’s “#1 Crush,” Quindon Tarver’s rendition of “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good),” Kym Mazelle’s “Young Hearts Run Free” and The Wannadies’ “You and Me Song.”

“Romeo + Juliet has influenced generations of filmmakers, musicians and audiences, and its impact continues to be felt 30 years later,” GEA Live producer and managing director Floris Douwes said.

“Our goal was to create a live experience that honours that legacy while giving audiences a fresh reason to fall in love with the film all over again.”

GEA Live is presenting the international production in collaboration with Disney Concerts and Luhrmann, with TEG Dainty partnering on the Australian tour.
