The acclaimed London revival of the legendary musical will arrive on the big screen for a limited theatrical season, ahead of a world tour in 2027.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical Starlight Express is racing into Australian cinemas, with a filmed version of the acclaimed London revival set for international release on November 26, 2026.

Trafalgar Releasing has announced that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express – Live on Stage will screen for a limited time in Australia, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Canada, giving audiences the opportunity to experience one of musical theatre’s most spectacular productions on the big screen.

Filmed during the show’s celebrated 2024 London revival, the cinema release captures the high-energy production that has introduced a new generation to Lloyd Webber’s roller-skating musical.

First staged in 1984, Starlight Express has been seen by more than 30 million people worldwide, becoming one of the most successful musicals in theatre history.

The story follows Rusty, an underdog steam train who dreams of becoming the fastest engine in the world. When a child’s train set magically comes to life, a thrilling competition unfolds between rival locomotives, with Rusty drawing inspiration from the mysterious legend of the Starlight Express.

Combining elaborate choreography, roller-skating stunts, dazzling costumes and Lloyd Webber’s distinctive score, the musical features fan favourites including “AC/DC”, “Make Up My Heart”, “Light at the End of the Tunnel” and the title song.

The latest production opened at London’s Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in June 2024, marking a major revival of the musical four decades after its original premiere.

Produced by Michael Harrison for Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals, the revival introduced a new song, “Hydrogen”, written by Lloyd Webber and original lyricist Richard Stilgoe.

The production has since collected numerous accolades, including an Olivier Award and seven WhatsOnStage Awards, and has become London’s longest-running revival of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in two decades.

Directed for the stage by Luke Sheppard, whose credits include & Juliet and The Little Big Things, the production features choreography by Ashley Nottingham, with original choreographer Arlene Phillips returning as creative dramaturg.

The creative team also includes set designer Tim Hatley (Back to the Future), costume designer Gabriella Slade (Six), lighting designer Howard Hudson and sound designer Gareth Owen.

The filmed version is directed by Brett Sullivan, whose previous work includes the theatrical film of Hadestown, and was captured in London by Steam Motion and Sound.

The cast is led by Jeevan Braich as Rusty, alongside Jade Marvin as Momma McCoy, Olivia Ringrose as Greaseball, Asher Forth as Electra, Sophie Naglik as Pearl, Georgia Pemberton as Dinah and Jaydon Vijn as Hydra.

The cinema release comes ahead of a planned Starlight Express world tour in 2027, continuing the musical’s remarkable international success.

For Australian audiences, the screenings offer a rare opportunity to experience the ambitious London production without travelling overseas, bringing its elaborate staging, athletic performances and classic songs to cinemas around the country.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express – Live on Stage opens in Australian cinemas on November 26, 2026, for a limited time.
