Sydney’s Summer Gets Delightfully Mad: The Mas Hatter’s Tea Party at the Grand Electric
This summer, Sydney audiences are invited to tumble on down the rabbit hole and join a delightfully chaotic celebration of laughter, joy, and circus mayhem at The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, now playing at The Grand Electric until January 25.
Part circus cabaret, part theatrical spectacle, the entirely immersive show brings Lewis Carroll’s incredible world of Wonderland to life in a way that is entirely unique, playful and bursting with energy. Designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, the one-hour production blends physical comedy, high-flying acrobatics and audience interaction to create an experience that is as joyful as it is silly.
This latest incarnation of The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, directed by Mike Finch, former Artistic Director of Circus Oz, is a fresh reimagining of the much-loved Funatorium: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, and features a dynamic new cast, bold visual design and brand-new interpretations of Wonderland’s iconic characters.
The lunacy is everywhere, from the Cheshire Cat to the mischievous March Hare, with each character bringing their own wacky eccentricities to the tea table. World-class circus performers soar through the air and expect dazzling displays of balancing, tumbling, juggling and breathtaking acrobatics, all delivered with a joyful wink of anarchy that keeps the audience entertained and stays true to the origins of the legendary world.
Director Mike Finch describes the show as “a full-tilt celebration of imagination and joyful disorder. Kids love the wildness of it, adults love the wit, and everyone leaves their own favourite mad moment.”
The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party also marks the launch of the Grand Electric’s Little Sparks program, an initiative put forward to ignite creativity for children and families. This, combined with the show’s interactive nature, is designed to make the audience feel like participants rather than observers.
